The second Grand Slam of the season—and the only one played on clay—kicks off Sunday at the courts of Roland Garros in Paris. The tournament will run until the men’s singles final on Sunday, June 8. This is the first tournament in Paris following the retirement of Rafael Nadal—14-time Roland Garros champion. However, Spain will still be represented by last year's winner Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Alexander Zverev in the final and recently claimed the Rome title by beating Jannik Sinner. Both Sinner and Alcaraz begin their title campaigns on Monday.
Novak Djokovic is also participating, aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title. However, the Serbian has faced challenges this season and recently split with coach Andy Murray.
Jack Draper is in excellent form—he won the Indian Wells title and reached the Madrid final. He’s in the same section of the draw as Sinner. Also worth watching is Casper Ruud, who defeated Draper in the Spanish capital and is regaining momentum.
Reigning champion Iga Świątek will try to capture her fifth Paris title in six years and become the first woman in Open Era history to win the tournament four consecutive times. However, she hasn’t won a title yet in 2025 and is seeded only fifth. She could face US Open champion Emma Raducanu as early as the second round.
Also in her quarter of the draw is Jasmine Paolini, the fourth seed whom Świątek routed in the 2024 final. A fourth-round clash with the powerful-serving Elena Rybakina may be looming.
World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka isn’t known as a clay specialist, but her victory in Madrid proved her progress. Her aggressive style and improved mobility could be decisive factors.
Coco Gauff, the second seed, is seen as one of the top title contenders. Though she's struggled to match Świątek’s level in the same generation, her dominant win over the Pole in the Madrid semifinals has boosted her confidence heading into Paris.
